Invitations to play in next year's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl and CHaD East-West New Hampshire All-Star game were scheduled to be sent out this week.

Prior to the 2014 all-star games any New Hampshire player could participate in both events, but those who run the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl changed the rules last year and didn't allow any athlete who played in the CHaD All-Star Game, which is held in June, to play in the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, which is played in August. Players who were invited to both games were forced to select one over the other.

That is still the case this year. No athlete will be allowed to participate in both games. If a player receives an invitation to both games he will have to choose one over the other.

"It's not our decision, but unfortunately the kids will have to make a choice," CHaD All-Star Game founder Nick Vailas said before the CHaD East team was selected Wednesday night. "The Shrine cause is a noble cause. We're not in competition with them. We just felt strongly that New Hampshire deserved its own all-star game."

Vailas also pointed out that players selected to compete in the CHaD East-West All-Star Game are encouraged to raise money for the cause, but fundraising by the players is not mandatory.

The CHaD East-West All-Star Game will be played June 25 at Saint Anselm College. The Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl will be played Aug. 6 at Castleton (Vt.) University.

Players who receive an invitation to one or both all-star games are encouraged to speak with their head coach before making a decision.

Here's further proof that football, even at the high school level, has become a year-round sport.

Mike Fleury, a 6-foot-1, 270-pound offensive guard/defensive lineman who recently completed his sophomore season at Lebanon High School, is one of 59 players who were named to the the U.S. Under-17 National Team, which will compete against Canada in the 2016 International Bowl on Feb. 5, at AT&T Stadium -- home of the Dallas Cowboys -- in Arlington, Texas.

The game is part of the seventh annual International Bowl series, in which four high school-aged U.S. National Teams will compete against national teams from Canada.

"He played running back in junior high and he's a lacrosse player, so that gives you an idea how athletic he is," Lebanon coach Chris Childs said. "He's not just a big, slow guy. He's an athlete.

"I think it's going to help him make a name for himself. He's got a lot of potential. No doubt about it."

The process that landed Fleury a spot on the Under-17 National Team began in April, when he participated in a regional development camp held in Leominster, Mass. From there he was selected to attend a week-long National Team Development Camp held at Towson University in July. He was then chosen to represent the United States against Canada in the Under-17 International Bowl.

Brandon Faircloth of Port Neches-Groves (Texas) High School will coach the Under-17 Team. Faircloth led the 2014 U.S. Under-19 National Team to a 43-7 victory over Canada.

Fleury, 15, is the only player from New England on the roster.

Fleury, who was selected to be a captain on next year's Lebanon team, was named to the Division II North All-Conference Team as an offensive guard.

"He's a hard-working kid," Childs said. "I think he's got a bright future ahead of him."

Deunte Chatman, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker/running back from Humble, Texas, committed to the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday.

Chatman committed to New Mexico State last January, but reopened the recruiting process when New Mexico State requested that he grayshirt after he suffered an ACL injury. He played prep school football for Loomis Chaffee in Windsor, Conn., last season.

Chatman played linebacker and tight end at Summer Creek before he moved to running back.

Chatman announced his commitment on his Twitter account.

Army, Illinois State, Stephen F. Austin and New Mexico were among the other schools that extended a scholarship offer.

Steve Burns recently completed his fourth season as Trinity High School's football coach. It was also his last season as Trinity's football coach.

Burns, 39, met with his team Thursday to inform them that he had resigned from his coaching position.

"Hardest thing I've ever had to do," Burns said. "There were a lot of moving pieces to this one. It was a mix of personal and professional reasons.

"Telling the kids was devastating. I treat the kids who play for me as part of my family.

Burns spent nine seasons with the Trinity program, the last four as head coach. He also spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Memorial, one year as an assistant coach at Alvirne, and two years as an assistant coach at Salem

Burns guided the Pioneers to two playoff appearances. Trinity lost to Plymouth Regional in the 2012 Division IV championship game, and to Portsmouth in the 2013 Division III semifinals.

Burns, who teaches physical education at Memorial High School, also coached Trinity to a 2-1 record in three Thanksgiving Day games against Manchester Central.

Trinity won the NHIAA Sportsmanship Award in each of the past two seasons.

Bishop Guertin wide receiver Nick Lorden received a scholarship offer from the University of New Hampshire on Friday.

Lorden said it was a partial scholarship, but he has the opportunity to earn more scholarship money as he progresses as a player in the UNH program. Lorden also has an offer from Bryant University.

'I'd definitely say I have strong interest (in UNH)," Lorden said. "I went to their one-day camp in July, their URI game and when they played Maine. Plus the state championship game."

Lorden, who is 6-3 and weighs 200 pounds, is a Milford resident. He caught 41 passes for 890 yards and 17 touchdowns during his senior season, when BG advanced to the Division I quarterfinals.

"He adjusts to the ball very well," BG coach Jeff Moore said. "Whether it means he has to go up and get it at its highest point or come back for the long ball. He was stronger and more athletic than most of the kids he played against."

Babaian returns to Pelham

Pelham-Windham News

A familiar face will return to the sidelines when the Pelham High School football team takes the field this fall as Tom Babaian will return as the school's varsity football coach.

Babaian coached the Pythons from 1996 to 2011, when he compiled an overall record of 79-80, a playoff record of 8-4, and two state championships. Out of coaching for three years, Babaian returned as the defensive coordinator at Nashua South in 2015,

"I missed the culture, working with the kids, having them adapt to different things, learning new techniques, and the overall aspect and atmosphere of coaching football," Babaian said. "Being an educator at Pelham High School made sense from both a school administration viewpoint and my standpoint.  Knowing the kids, seeing them every day in a classroom environment, and understanding what the school needs from their football coach, and the culture you have to create for a successful program, it was a good match for both the school and myself.

"I really enjoy the kids at Pelham High, and the football  kids in particular are ready to work hard to get our program going in the right direction again. Working with the local youth program plays a key  initiative in the ongoing success of any high school program. In our case the Razorbacks are no different. They've done a really nice job over the years getting the kids prepared for what's going to happen at the high school level. Hopefully we can build on that organization's success at the high school level. Several of their coaches have been my high school assistant coaches in the past and we have a very good relationship."

The Pythons posted undefeated seasons and won back to back Division V state titles under Babaian in 2007 and 2008.

Emmanual "Pop" Lacey is among the athletes expected to sign a National Letter of Intent next month to play football at the University of New Hampshire.

Lacey, a 6-foot, 185-pound wide receiver, said he gave a verbal commitment to UNH during his official visit to the school in late December.

"I loved the players and the coaches," Lacey said via text message. "The atmosphere that surrounded the team was like no other. The entire team is family oriented, which is something I care about."

Lacey, who lives in Douglassville, Pa., was a three-sport athlete in high school, when he also played basketball and and baseball. He graduated from Berks Catholic High School in Reading, Pa., but played for the Kent School in Kent, Conn., last season.

Lacey said his decision came down to a choice between UNH and Towson.

National Signing Day is Feb. 3.

Bowes headed to college Hall of Fame

0
0
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Former University of New Hampshire football coach Bill Bowes was named to the 2016 College Football Hall of Fame Class by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame on Friday. He is the first member of the UNH program selected for the Hall.

Bowes is one of 16 people (14 players, two coaches) who will be inducted at the 59th  NFF Annual Awards Dinner held Dec. 6 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Inductees will also be honored at the National Hall of Fame Salute at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Dec. 31. This accomplishment will be forever immortalized at the College football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

The inductees were selected from the national ballot of 76 players and five coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and the 92 players and 27 coaches from the divisional ranks.

Bowes coached the UNH football team for 27 seasons, retiring after the 1998 season as the all-time winningest coach in Yankee Conference/Atlantic 10 history with a mark of 175-106-5 and seven Coach of the Year awards. His UNH squads posted winning records 21 times, including 20 of his final 24 years at the helm. To this day, his 97 conference victories are No. 2 on the all-time list behind Villanova's Andy Talley.

In Bowes' final season on the sidelines, All-America running back Jerry Azumah rushed for 2,195 yards and 22 touchdowns en route to winning the Walter Payton Award. In the process, Azumah became the all-time leading rusher in I-AA football with 6,193 yards. Azumah headlined a group of 12 All-America selections, six All-Atlantic 10 First-Team selections and 69 Yankee Conference First-Team representatives in the Bill Bowes era. Azumah was one of Bowes' 22 Wildcats to play in the NFL.

"His teams were always known for their toughness and resiliency, but also for their great character and integrity," current UNH head coach Sean McDonnell said. "It was a blue-collar football program where the name 'New Hampshire' really stood for excellence and competitiveness.

"He was an outstanding coach and teacher who influenced his players day in and day out, on the field and off," McDonnell added. "The lessons he taught keep teaching us throughout our relationships and careers."

Bowes, who joined the UNH coaching staff as an offensive line coach in 1966 before becoming the youngest head coach in school history in 1972, guided the Wildcats to four Yankee Conference championships (1975, '76, '91, '94). He strung together eight straight winning seasons from 1974-81 and had nine consecutive winning campaigns from 1983-91.
